UQP launches a poetry podcast, Extraordinary Voices for Extraordinary Times

Thanks to generous funding from the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, UQP is excited to announce that we are launching a podcast series, Extraordinary Voices for Extraordinary Times, hosted by Ellen van Neerven and Omar Sakr.

From July, on alternating months, Ellen then Omar will invite a fellow extraordinary poet to write a responsive poem reflecting on the current moment, while also writing their own new poem that processes recent events.

These two new poems will be published on the UQP website and also read and discussed in a monthly podcast, focusing on the inspiration for the poem and the two poets’ writing process.

Confirmed poets pairing with Ellen and Omar include: Eunice Andrada, Ouyang Yu, Charmaine Papertalk Green, Lachlan Brown and Ali Cobby Eckermann.

The co-hosts of Extraordinary Voices for Extraordinary Times, Ellen van Neerven and Omar Sakr, say: ‘We’re excited to be able to provide a platform for poets we admire. Poetry is what we turn to in uncertain times. In the right hands, poetry is a transformative force – a space for reckonings and for truth-telling that pushes against lyric possibilities.’

Ellen’s second poetry collection, Throat, was published earlier this year. Omar Sakr’s second collection, The Lost Arabs, was published in 2019.

The first podcast will be released on 10 July. Tune in via the UQP website or subscribe wherever you get your favourite podcasts.
