Since its inception in 2002, the award has grown from a visionary idea into a prestigious event supported by a network of literary champions. With the involvement of renowned figures like Alex Buzo and the continued support of Principal Sponsors Mark and Evette Moran, and alongside community partners, the award continues to honour the vital role of research-based literature in Australian culture.
This year’s judging panel included writer, editor and arts producer Lliane Clarke, publisher and editor Julia Carlomagno, and author and publishing professional Angela Meyer, who assessed the 174 submissions for the award.
Lliane Clarke said: ‘For me, the works that stand out take the reader on an unexpected learning and revelatory journey – where we learn something new about the world and our own soul.’
Last year's prize was awarded to Melissa Lucashenko for her novel Edenglassie.
