UQP announces the recipient of the 2021 UQP Writing Mentorship

UQP and The University of Queensland’s School of Communications and Arts are pleased to announce that Brooke Maddison is the recipient of the 2021 UQP Writing Mentorship.

The UQP Writing Mentorship was established to share knowledge, nurture creativity and develop culturally important stories, and is open to current students and recent graduates of UQ postgraduate writing programs.

Brooke Maddison will receive editorial support and advice from UQP Publisher Aviva Tuffield to develop her transracial adoption memoir, You Are The Story.

‘This year’s entries were high quality and we were excited to see the different writing styles and genres coming out of the WEP course,’ said the judges.

You Are The Story explores grief and loss through the lens of transracial adoption and speaks to the impacts that trauma has on the creation of narrative and identity. Brooke Maddison is an adoptive mother, and the project is her attempt to write herself to her son: ‘…to tie us together through language, memory, and story; revealing how our relationship is forged through shared narratives rather than biology.’

Brooke is currently undertaking a Masters of Writing, Editing and Publishing at UQ.

Applications for the 2021 mentorship will open in mid-2022.
