UQP acquires accomplished debut from screenwriter Thomas Vowles
UQP is thrilled to announce the acquisition of screenwriter and author Thomas Vowles’s first novel. A psychological thriller set in Melbourne’s queer scene, The End of Everything is narrated by Ash, who has recently arrived in the city and fallen in love with his charismatic new friend, James. After witnessing a disturbing altercation at a party, Ash suspects that James’s mysterious boyfriend is hid-ing a sinister side. Is he dangerous? Or is Ash’s jealousy fuelling paranoid delusions? The End of Everything mixes the suspense of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl with the gritty emotional landscape of Christos Tsiolkas’s Loaded to tell a story that will haunt readers long after the final page.
UQP has acquired world rights and will publish in July 2025.
Publisher Aviva Tuffield says:
‘Thomas’s debut novel has an assured quality that reflects his success as a screenwriter. The dialogue is sharp and snappy, and the plot twists are dizzying. At the same time, the writing is literary and there is a depth to the characters that you don’t always find in this genre. I love this manuscript, and I can’t wait to press this daring work of fiction into readers’ hands, especially since it’s a conversation starter and offers no easy answers.’
Thomas Vowles says:
‘I’m psyched that my debut novel will be ushered into the world by the brilliance of Aviva Tuffield, editor Ian See and the team at UQP. We share a vision for what this book can be: a tense and unsettling genre piece that centres complex queer characters. Above all, I wanted to create a reading experience that could inhabit the tricky questions that were disorientating me at the time of writing, questions about desire, reality and the nature of the self.’
