Glendower Award for an Emerging Queensland writer now open for entries

Entries are now open for the Glendower Award – an award that opens up career pathways and exciting opportunities for emerging Queensland writers.

The annual development award, administered by State Library of Queensland as part of the Queensland Literary Awards, was established in 1999 with the aim to mentor Queensland writers in the early stages of their careers.

This award - which includes $15,000 prize money and manuscript development and publication with UQP - is for an outstanding unpublished manuscript by a Queensland resident over eighteen years of age and is proudly supported by Jenny Summerson through the Queensland Library Foundation.

Many previous winners of the Glendower Award, such as Karen Foxlee, Steven Lang, and Rebecca Jessen have gone on to achieve notable writing careers.

Since publication in 2021, previous winner Rhiannon Wilde’s young adult novel Henry Hamlet’s Heart has had North American rights sold to US publisher Charlesbridge, and was longlisted for the 2022 Indie Book Awards.

UQP has since acquired world rights for Rhiannon’s exquisitely written second novel, Where They Left Us, to be published in 2022. The Glendower Award is a significant career-building opportunity for aspiring emerging Queensland writers. Rhiannon says, ‘to say this award changed the direction of my life would be an understatement’.

2021 winner Siang Lu’s incisive and comedic debut novel The Whitewash will be published in 2022.

‘Winning the Glendower Award has been an incredible opportunity and journey’ says Siang. 'From working with such a wonderful publisher in UQP, to getting a close-up look at an industry I've long admired from afar. I'd encourage anyone with a story and a burning desire to tell it, to get involved and submit!’.

More information about the awards can be found here and the entry form here. Nominations close 29 April 2022.
