UQP acquires two new books by Tony Birch

UQP is delighted to announce that we have acquired Tony Birch’s next two books: a new story collection, Dark as Last Night, and a work of poetry, Whisper Songs.

Dark as Last Night confirms, yet again, that Tony is a master of the short form. These exceptional stories capture the power of human connection at pivotal moments in our lives, whether those occur because of the loss of a loved one or the uncertainties of childhood.

The poems in Whisper Songs examine issues of family, loss – of people and place – and the legacies of colonial violence, including the ‘fiction’ of the archive. These stunning poems are both deeply personal and highly political, often at the same time.

Publisher Aviva Tuffield says: ‘We at UQP are so excited to be publishing two new books by Tony Birch in 2021. Tony is the only person I know who has been productive during lockdown, writing an incredible range of high-calibre work. While different in form and style, both books share Tony’s preoccupation with the humanity of those who are often marginalised or overlooked, and the search for justice for people and our environment.’
