Tony Birch’s bestselling The White Girl to be published in the US

Tony Birch’s The White Girl will be published in North America by HarperVia, an imprint of HarperCollins Publisher.

The deal for World English excluding Australia/New Zealand was handled by UQP Rights Manager Kate McCormack and was negotiated with Judith Curr and Rosie Black from HarperVia. They will publish The White Girl on March 15, 2022.

HarperVia President and Publisher Judith Curr said: ‘I admire how Tony Birch’s work helps us understand the history, struggles, and culture of Aboriginal Australians, and I know American readers will come to this thriller for its accessible artistry as well as its powerful and important message.’

UQP Publishing Director Madonna Duffy said: ‘achieving this significant rights sale for The White Girl into the US has come from our Rights Manager Kate McCormack’s dedication and excellent contacts. After a 10-year publishing relationship with Tony Birch over seven books, we couldn’t be happier to see this overseas success for him.’

Rights Manager Kate McCormack says, ‘The White Girl has already sold into Arabic (Al Turjman) and Danish (Forlaget Feldtfos), while a French edition of Blood was published by Editions Mercure in 2016. We’re so pleased that this deal will bring Tony Birch’s story to a much wider audience.’

The White Girl won the 2020 New South Wales Premier’s Prize for Indigenous Writing and was shortlisted for the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award. Damienne Pradier and Tony Briggs of Typecast are developing The White Girl in a feature film with Tracy Rigney (The Sapphires) as the director and co-writer.
