The White Girl longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award

We are delighted that The White Girl by Tony Birch has been longlisted for the 2020 Miles Franklin Literary Award. Richard Neville, State Library of NSW Mitchell Librarian and judge of the Miles Franklin Literary Award said:

This year's Miles Franklin longlist is a mix of established and newer Australian authors. Their novels give voice to a diversity of Australian characters whose common feature is their location on the margins, whether geographical, familial or societal. They explore the ripples and repercussions of childhood trauma, the healing power of friendship, and the unshakeable presence of the past.

In The White Girl, Tony Birch shines a spotlight on the 1960s and the devastating government policy of taking Indigenous children from their families.

The shortlist will be announced on Wednesday 17 June 2020.
