Merrill Findlay was born in Condobolin in central western New South Wales and spent most of her childhood on her family’s farm near the village of Bogan Gate. She returns to the farm regularly to refresh her spirit but has lived in many places since she left boarding school, and has done many different things – often to the complete bewilderment of her family and friends! She currently lives and works in the inner Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, where she founded the small environmental organisation, Imagine the Future Inc., which is closely associated with the Australian Conservation Foundation. She has recently been working towards her Masters degree in Social Science at RMIT University. Merrill has been involved in a broad range of progressive social movements in Australia and overseas throughout her unconventional adult life and sees this ongoing commitment as integral to her praxis as a writer. Her novel, Republic of Women, was published by UQP in 1999.
