Biography
Barbara Blackman is an author, music-lover, essayist, librettist, letter writer and poet. Born and bred in Brisbane, she was educated at Brisbane State High School and later studied at the University of Queensland, becoming the youngest member of ‘Barjai’, an avant-garde writers group in Brisbane (Thea Astley was the eldest at 21). She was married to the painter Charles Blackman for thirty years and they had three children. In the 1950s, they lived in Melbourne and moved in Australian art circles with Arthur Boyd, Joy Hester, John and Sunday Reed, Clifton Pugh, John Perceval, Mirka Mora and many more.
