FAQs - Manuscripts and Agents

All information contained herein is subject to change. Please refer to these guidelines when preparing your submission.

We accept unsolicited manuscripts only in the following categories:

  • Academic manuscripts in the Humanities and Social Sciences

We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts in the following categories:

  • Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Non-fiction - UQP is not accepting unsolicited non-fiction submissions as of 1 June 2010. We hope to reopen our non-fiction list to unsolicited submissions toward the end of 2010, but are unable to confirm a date at this time. Please check these submissions guidelines for updates on when you can submit manuscripts in this category.
  • Children's and Young Adult fiction or non-fiction - UQP's Children and Young Adult department is not accepting any unsolicited manuscripts at this time, for any age group or topic. Any unsolicted manuscripts received will be returned. Please check these submission guidelines in January 2011 for an update on the situation.

For these categories, submissions must be made by a recognised literary agent.

Examples of the types of book we do not publish include:

  • Travel Guides
  • Food & Lifestyle
  • Plays & Music Scores
  • Mind/Body/Spirit
  • Technical & Scientific Textbooks
  • Unrevised theses and Conference proceedings

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Due to the fact that we are a small publishing house:

  • We are unable to acknowledge receipt of your manuscript.
  • We are unable to provide detailed comments on unsuccessful manuscripts.
  • It may take 3 to 6 months for unsolicited manuscripts to be considered. We appreciate your patience during this time.

All submissions must include the following:

  • Covering letter (including details of target audience)
  • Author CV (including information about any previous publications)
  • Brief synopsis or chapter summary (please include an overview of the entire story, including how it ends)
  • 3-4 sample chapters as hard copy only. We do not accept submissions by email, on CD-ROM, or by any other digital media.
  • Use double line spacing
  • Number the pages
  • Print on only one side of each page
  • Stamped, self-addressed envelope for return of your manuscript. Unsuccessful manuscripts not accompanied by their own return postage are held for no longer than four weeks after the notification letter is sent from UQP.

Please note:

  • All care is taken, but no responsibility accepted for loss or damage of unsolicited manuscripts received.
  • Keep a copy of your manuscript.
  • Do not send original art work or photographs.
