Thea Astley was born in Brisbane and studied at the University of Queensland. Her first collection of short stories, Hunting the Wild Pineapple, won the Townsville Literary Foundation Award in 1979, and It\'s Raining in Mango won the Steel Rudd Award and the 1988 FAW ANA Literature Award. She won the Miles Franklin Award three times: in 1962 for The Well Dressed Explorer, in 1965 for The Slow Natives (which also won the Moomba Award), and in 1972 for The Acolyte. A Kindness Cup won the Age Book of the Year Award, Beachmasters won the Australian Literary Society Golf Medal in 1987, and Reaching Tin River won the New south Wales Award for fiction. Thea Astley lived and wrote on the New South Wales south coast until her death in 2004.
